"Dry Brushing" a Plastic Chair
With warm weather and sunny skies around the corner, most of us will be spending more time enjoying the outdoors in our yards and on our decks. In this post, Kerri shows us how to transform a cheap and cheerful plastic patio chair into a beachy dream!She took this flashy green chair:
And gave it this fantastic faux driftwood finish:
Here's what she used:
- Coco Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan
- Paris Grey Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan
- Old White Chalk Paint™ by Annie Sloan
- Artisan Enhancements Clear Topcoat Sealer
- Annie Sloan Small Oval Paint Brush
- Artisan Enhancements Topcoat Brush
- Chip Brush
Here's how she did it:When painting on plastic, your first coat will be thin and transparent. The second coat will provide amazing coverage. Kerri began by applying two coats of Coco Chalk Paint™. 
Next, she used an inexpensive chip brush to “dry brush” the chair with Paris Grey Chalk Paint™. In dry brushing, dip only the tips of your brush into the paint and "pounce" some of the paint off the brush-onto a paper plate so that very little paint remains on the bristles. Gently, Kerri brushed and dragged the tip of the chip brush over the Coco to mimic a wood grain. You will repeat until you are satisfied with the look.Next, using the same dry brushing technique, she did the same with Old White Chalk Paint™. Using two or three colours creates more depth of texture on the surface of the chair to better replicate the look of worn wood. 
For most exterior Chalk Paint™ projects, it is not necessary to protect them after they have been painted. Chalk Paint™ can be applied to front doors, home exteriors, bird houses, metal and cement garden statuary and almost anything else! Simply allow exterior projects to cure for 48 hours after painting, then blot with a damp sponge or cloth to “set” the paint before putting them outside. We do not recommend using Annie Sloan Soft Wax on exterior projects as the warmth of the sun prevents the wax from curing. Teak outdoor furniture can also be troublesome to paint because of the oils used with teak wood.Alternatively, if you'd like, you can use an exterior grade sealer like the Artisan Enhancements Clear Topcoat Sealer. When the paint is dry, use the topcoat brush to brush on one coat of the sealer. This sealer is great for both interior and exterior use.Cheers!Interiors to InspireDid you like this post?
